The Warsaw Uprising was the largest battle carried out during World War II by a clandestine organization with occupying forces. The insurgents fought against regular Nazi formations, without heavy weapons, planes, canons and tanks. Although the fighting was to last for a few days, it lasted 63 days. The uprising was a phenomenon on the scale of occupied Europe, about 50,000 inhabitants of Warsaw took part in it - men, women and children.. It did not achieve military or political goals, however, for future generations of Poles it became a symbol of courage in the fight for independence. It was the most significant activity of the Home Army.
